Singer-songwriter Grace VanderWaal provided a brief glimpse of her talent during her audition in 2016, just prior to her debut on America’s Got Talent. “I’m performing my own song tonight, as I believe it truly represents who I am,” stated the then-12-year-old Grace, who was originally from Kansas and residing in New York at that time. “I hope it does.” To summarize, it certainly did.
Due to her remarkable performance, Grace was heralded as “the next Taylor Swift,” setting her on a successful path filled with accolades. In Season 11, she clinched the $1 million prize on AGT. When Simon asked about the song she would perform, she replied, “It’s about me,” and noted that most of her classmates “don’t really know I sing.”
Her friends, along with the audience of AGT, were among the first to experience her unique voice and emotive songwriting style. Accompanied by her ukulele, Grace captivated everyone from the very first note of “I Don’t Know My Name,” a sincere and heartfelt composition about self-discovery. Simon pressed the Golden Buzzer, propelling Grace directly to the live performances. Howie rushed to embrace her as she was overcome with joy. “You are amazing,” he remarked.
Simon expressed that Grace’s ability to draw songwriting inspiration from her own experiences reminded him of a pop icon. “Grace, I predict you will be the next Taylor Swift,” he stated. “What a remarkable girl. What a wonderful personality,” Simon commented to his fellow judges.
“Wow,” exclaimed Heidi Klum. “That is a significant wow.” “She is exceptional,” added Mel B. “Do you believe we have a star now?” Howie inquired of Simon. “I absolutely believe we have a star,” Simon affirmed, expressing his frustration at not being able to press the Golden Buzzer himself.
