BREAKING NEWS: Pope Francis Has Passed Away

Vatican City — April 21, 2025

In a deeply sorrowful announcement, the Vatican has confirmed that His Holiness Pope Francis has passed away at the age of 88. The Argentine-born pontiff, whose real name was Jorge Mario Bergoglio, died peacefully in the Vatican following complications related to his long-standing health issues.

The news was delivered in an official statement by the Holy See early Monday morning, sending shockwaves throughout the global Catholic community and beyond. “With profound sadness, we announce that the Holy Father, Pope Francis, has returned to the house of the Father. We ask for prayers and unity during this time of mourning,” read the statement.

Pope Francis, elected in March 2013, was the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church and the first from the Americas. Known for his humility, compassion, and emphasis on social justice, he became a transformative figure, reaching out to the marginalized, advocating for the poor, and addressing pressing global issues such as climate change, migration, and interfaith dialogue.

Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis called for a Church that is inclusive and merciful, famously saying, “Who am I to judge?” in response to questions about homosexuality in the Church. He also pushed for internal reforms and greater transparency within the Vatican.

World leaders and religious figures from around the globe have begun expressing their condolences. President of Argentina, along with other heads of state, have declared days of mourning in honor of the late pontiff. Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, currently the Dean of the College of Cardinals, is expected to lead funeral arrangements.

The Vatican has announced that details regarding the funeral and the upcoming conclave to elect the next pope will be released shortly. In the meantime, millions of faithful are expected to travel to St. Peter’s Square in Rome to pay their final respects.

As the bells of the Vatican ring solemnly, the world bids farewell to a shepherd who sought peace, justice, and mercy.

May he rest in peace.
